U.S. container imports hit third-highest level on record in August, reports Descartes

U.S. container imports climbed to their third-highest monthly level on record in August, with growth spread across most major ports and from nine of the 10 countries tracked.Imports totaled 2,603,709 twenty-foot equivalent units, or TEUs, up 3.8% from July and 3.3% from August 2025, according to Descartes’ September Global Shipping Report. Only May 2022 and July 2025 recorded higher monthly totals.August volume was also 21.5% above the same month in 2019. Through the first eight months of 2026, imports were down just 0.4% from a year earlier.“At 2.6M TEUs, August’s elevated volumes demonstrate that U.S. import demand remains strong, with growth across most leading sourcing countries and ports,” said Jackson Wood, Director of Industry Strategy at Descartes.Please click here to read the complete article.
