DHL Express Commits $90M to Modernize and Expand New York-Area Operations

Major $90 million investment announced for the New York region

DHL Express said it will invest $90 million to expand and upgrade its operations serving the New York metropolitan area. The package covers new facilities, enhanced automation and improved air connections to increase capacity and speed deliveries across the region.

Manhattan service center relocating to Jersey City

As part of the program, DHL will move its Manhattan service center to a new 92,505-square-foot facility in Jersey City, New Jersey. The company expects the relocation to be completed by the end of November 2025.

The site sits roughly five miles from Lower Manhattan and is positioned to make daily deliveries into Manhattan smoother and more efficient.

Jersey City facility features and throughput improvements

The new Jersey City building will include on-site electric vehicle charging stations, improved access for courier vehicles and upgraded dispatch systems designed to accelerate drivers' departures.

With new material-handling equipment, DHL says the Jersey City center will be able to sort twice the volume handled at the prior Manhattan site, increasing conveyable throughput from 3,000 to 6,000 packages per hour.

Brooklyn expansion and automation gains

DHL also enlarged its Brooklyn facility to 70,202 square feet, nearly triple the footprint of the former site. Upgraded automation at that location will double sorting capability from 1,500 to 3,000 packages per hour.

Network rebalancing across boroughs and Long Island

The projects form part of a broader plan to strengthen DHL's presence across the metro area and better distribute volumes among facilities. The company cited several specific locations involved in the regional alignment:

  • Brooklyn
  • The Bronx
  • Queens
  • Long Island City
  • Hauppauge

DHL said the expanded footprint will help relieve pressure at high-demand sites, even out shipment flows and boost service reliability for customers across these markets.

To support faster and more reliable transit into the area, DHL is adding a direct flight between its main U.S. hub in Cincinnati/Northern Kentucky (CVG) and Newark Liberty International Airport (EWR). That new routing places aircraft operations closer to the Jersey City service center.

Other New York-area facilities will continue to move freight through John F. Kennedy International Airport (JFK).

DHL expects the additional CVG–EWR link to shorten transit times and improve on-time performance for metro-area shipments.

Operational benefits and company rationale

DHL described the investment as a response to growing customer demand and part of a longer-term modernization of its U.S. network. The company said the upgrades aim to increase speed, reliability and sustainability while maintaining high service standards.

Key benefits DHL highlighted include:

  • Higher sorting throughput at primary regional hubs
  • Reduced bottlenecks and better distribution of shipment volumes
  • Shorter transit times through improved air connectivity
  • Enhanced operational safety and courier accessibility

Timeline, planning history and staffing

DHL told reporters the plan has been in development since the second quarter of 2023. The Jersey City move is scheduled to finish by the end of November 2025.

Approximately 450 employees — including agents, managers and couriers — will work across DHL Express' Greater New York facilities, which encompass the new Jersey City center and locations in Long Island City, Hauppauge, Brooklyn and the Bronx.

Comments from DHL leadership and company perspective

Greg Hewitt, CEO of DHL Express U.S., said the New York City area is a core part of the company's U.S. network and a critical gateway for international trade. He added that the investment will provide the infrastructure needed to support growing customer demand for years to come.

Company spokespeople also emphasized that the combined facility upgrades and air-route changes will allow DHL to manage rising shipment volumes with greater speed, reliability and sustainability while protecting service quality.
